Crime Responses | EFL Crime and Consequences Discussion Activity

Get your students thinking, discussing and making decisions with this engaging EFL speaking activity that explores how society responds to crime. Students consider different approaches to dealing with offenders, from punishment and protecting the public to rehabilitation and repairing harm, whilst developing their ability to express opinions, justify decisions and consider alternative viewpoints.

The resource includes detailed teacher guidance, six printable Purpose Cards and nine Response Cards covering approaches such as community service, fines, compensation, restorative justice and rehabilitation. Working in small groups, learners discuss the aims of different responses, match possible consequences to their intended purposes and consider which approaches might be most appropriate in different circumstances.

The activities naturally develop speaking, critical thinking, negotiation, reasoning and collaborative decision making skills. Students are encouraged to consider different perspectives, discuss potential outcomes and reach agreements, using language to explain their choices and challenge the reasoning of others.

Designed to complement our How Serious Is It? activity, Crime Responses works particularly well as a follow on discussion using the Crime Cards and Background Cards from that resource. It can also be used independently to explore the purposes and possible consequences of different responses to crime.
