How serious is a crime, and can knowing the full story change your mind? Get students discussing, debating and questioning their assumptions with this engaging EFL crime ranking activity that explores how intentions, consequences and personal circumstances can influence our judgements.
The resource includes detailed teacher guidance, 12 printable Crime Cards and three sets of Background Cards, each presenting different circumstances surrounding the same offences. Working in small groups, students initially rank crimes from most to least serious, discussing their reasoning and negotiating a ranking they can agree on. From littering and shoplifting to fraud, burglary and more serious offences, the scenarios encourage learners to consider what makes one crime more serious than another.
The activity then introduces an unexpected twist. Groups receive different background information about the crimes and must reconsider their original decisions. Students compare alternative versions of the same offences, explain how their opinions have changed and explore whether factors such as intention, remorse, personal circumstances and consequences should influence their judgements.
The activities naturally develop speaking fluency, critical thinking, reasoning, negotiation and collaborative decision making. By encouraging students to justify opinions, challenge different perspectives and reconsider their conclusions, How Serious Is It? creates opportunities for meaningful discussion without relying on a single correct answer.
Whether used as a complete speaking lesson or part of a wider crime and mystery themed project, this thought provoking activity encourages students to look beyond first impressions and consider how much the full story really matters.
