On the Run | EFL Detective Strategy and Communication Game

Put your students' strategy, deduction and communication skills to the test with On the Run, an engaging EFL detective game where one player must escape whilst the other tries to track them down. This exciting game of cat and mouse challenges learners to think ahead, make strategic decisions and respond to new information as they attempt to outsmart their opponent.

The resource includes detailed teacher instructions, printable Detective and Suspect sheets featuring 8 × 8 playing grids, and a range of alternative gameplay rules. Working in pairs, one student takes the role of a Suspect attempting to cross the grid without being caught, whilst the other becomes the Detective, searching for clues and blocking possible escape routes. Each move brings new decisions, with players using coordinates, tracking movements and adjusting their strategies as the game unfolds.

The game encourages logical thinking, deduction, problem solving and strategic decision making whilst providing opportunities to practise clear communication and following instructions in English. As the Detective searches for clues and the Suspect attempts to avoid capture, both players must consider their next moves carefully and react to their opponent's decisions.

A selection of optional gameplay variations allows teachers to adjust the challenge to suit different abilities. From introducing a stationed Police Officer or allowing extra searches to giving the Suspect diagonal moves, a head start or a larger playing grid, these alternatives add variety and encourage students to experiment with different strategies. Learners can even invent and negotiate their own rules, creating further opportunities for meaningful communication.
