What really happened to the Princes in the Tower? What is lurking beneath Loch Ness? And why did three lighthouse keepers vanish without a trace? Get your students thinking creatively, questioning evidence and putting their persuasive speaking skills to the test with The Conspiracy Files, an imaginative EFL classroom activity exploring six famous British mysteries.

The resource includes detailed teacher guidance and six printable Mystery Files covering intriguing historical events, unexplained disappearances and mysterious sightings. From the Green Children of Woolpit and the Devil's Footprints to the Rendlesham Forest Incident, each case provides background information that students can use as the starting point for their own outrageous conspiracy theories.

Working in small groups, learners take on the challenge of uncovering a supposedly hidden truth behind their assigned mystery. They must invent an imaginative but apparently convincing explanation, identify possible suspects and motives, devise elaborate cover ups and create sensational new evidence to support their claims. Students then take on the roles of investigative journalists, preparing and delivering short presentations designed to persuade their classmates that their extraordinary theories could be true.

The activity encourages creative thinking, collaborative problem solving, persuasive language and presentation skills whilst developing students' ability to construct arguments, explain ideas and respond to challenging questions. After presenting their theories, groups face questions from their classmates before voting for the Most Outrageous Conspiracy and Most Convincing Cover Up. An optional follow up discussion encourages learners to consider how genuine facts can be used to support misleading claims and how to distinguish real evidence from invented information.

Whether used as a creative speaking lesson, a group presentation challenge or part of a wider crime and mystery themed project, The Conspiracy Files offers an entertaining way to combine imagination, persuasive communication and critical thinking.

This resource is also part of our Crime & Mystery | EFL Resource Pack, which is available to download here.
